Student-Run Opportunities at Nichols College
Learn by Doing Through Real-World Experience
At Nichols College, students do more than study business concepts in the classroom. They participate in real operations, consult with clients, and make financial decisions through structured, student-led opportunities embedded in the academic experience.
These programs allow students to apply what they are learning in real time, by working in customer-facing environments, managing projects and participating in investment decision-making. These experiential learning opportunities allow students to build confidence, strengthen professional skills and graduate with practical experience that stands out to employers.
Student-Run Experiences at Nichols
Student-run opportunities are a core part of the Nichols College applied learning model, complementing internships, student-faculty collaboration and professional development programs.
Dudley Hill Golf Course and Bison Den Clubhouse
Located adjacent to campus in Dudley, MA, the Dudley Hill Golf Course and onsite Bison Den clubhouse at Nichols College is a 9-hole executive course that is owned and operated by Nichols. As a living classroom and working public golf course in Worcester County, it provides hands-on exposure to customer service, operations, marketing, sales, accounting and business management.
Through supervised participation in day-to-day operations, students may support guest services, assist with operational coordination, and observe how a public-facing business functions in real time. The experience gives students insight into hospitality, operations, and business strategy while building professional skills and interacting with customers and community members.
Bison Consulting Group
The Bison Consulting Group at Nichols College provides students with structured consulting experience by working on real business challenges in Central Massachusetts and beyond. Through this student-led organization, participants collaborate with external clients to analyze operations, marketing strategies and organizational processes. Bison Consulting offers real-world solutions to business opportunities and makes real money that is reinvested in the consulting group.
Guided by faculty mentors, student consultants perform research, present recommendations and develop professional communication skills. Projects may involve process improvement, basic financial analysis, social media marketing or market evaluation. By working directly with clients, students learn how to translate classroom theory into practical solutions while strengthening their résumés and preparing for competitive internships and careers.
Thunder Fund (Student-Managed Investment Fund)
The Thunder Fund gives Nichols College students hands-on exposure to investment management through a student-managed portfolio. As part of an experiential 2-course sequence, students analyze market conditions, conduct security research and evaluate investment decisions.
Using professional tools and financial software, participants gain practical understanding of financial markets and investment strategy. Students learn how to assess risk, communicate findings, and defend decisions in a collaborative environment.
The experience reinforces analytical thinking and prepares students for roles in finance, investment analysis, and related fields.
BYB: Build Your Business
Build Your Business, a new academic course introduced in spring 2026, allows students to spend a semester launching their own business or strengthening an existing one. The program is open to all students, with the 300- and 400-level courses specifically designed for students who have an operating business. This initiative formally links business experience with academic rigor, providing a unique and valuable pathway for students who have or are developing their own ventures. The program is supported by a new curriculum of one-credit, project-based courses, and a strong mentorship model, where students can earn up to 12 academic credits
The BYB initiative represents a significant shift from the conventional model of entrepreneurship education, emphasizing active doing over passive learning. Unlike programs centered on theoretical case studies, this curriculum is a living laboratory where students apply concepts in real-time to the most critical business of all—their own. The program’s core philosophy is that a student’s business progress is their academic progress, linking their success directly to their degree. This formal recognition of entrepreneurial work provides a powerful incentive, transforming a student’s side hustle into a credible, professionally guided venture and ensuring they graduate with a resume that includes a degree and a functioning business.
Why Student-Run Opportunities Matter
Student-run opportunities at Nichols College are designed to bridge the gap between academics and professional practice. Hands-on experiences like Dudley Hill Golf Club, Bison Consulting and the Thunder Fund help students strengthen communication skills, leadership development and decision-making abilities in real settings. This experience translates directly to the workplace, so students graduate with both knowledge and know-how.
Because these programs operate on our Dudley, MA, campus but engage with external clients and community members across the country, students gain exposure to the expectations of professional environments before graduation.
For many students, these opportunities become stepping stones to internships, graduate study and full-time employment.
