The Professional Development Seminar (PDS) is the structured, multi-year pathway for building professional skills and job readiness at Nichols College.

It’s a cornerstone of the College’s philosophy on early career preparation in college and a required part of the undergraduate curriculum. Offered on campus in Worcester County, PDS is one key reason that Nichols is known for producing confident and career-ready graduates.

The seminar follows a cohort model from the first year through junior year. Students grow together, learn from shared experiences and build the foundation they need to succeed in internships and early career roles.

Foundations of Professional Development at Nichols College

PDS begins by teaching the basic skills every student needs to navigate college and the early stages of a career. Sessions focus on clear communication, personal responsibility and the habits that help students manage academic expectations and career launch.

Students learn:

  • Goal setting and time management
  • Resume writing and basic formatting
  • Career development resources
  • Networking basics and making a great first impression

These early lessons help students gain confidence and begin preparing for internships. Early on in this seminar, students are also introduced to Nichols career services, which becomes a major support system throughout their college experience.

Real-World Career Readiness

As students move through the seminar sequence, PDS shifts into more advanced skill-building. The program integrates experiential learning and project-based learning to help students apply their knowledge in real scenarios.

Course topics include:

  • Resume refinement and cover letter writing
  • Interviewing skills through mock interviews
  • Professional etiquette in the workplace
  • Advanced networking and personal branding tactics
  • Budgeting and planning

As part of the program, every student participates in a mock interview with a guest employer, refining their resume and cover letter for an internship or job of interest in preparation for this experience. These sessions complement classroom learning and introduce responsibilities students will encounter in internships and early career roles.
