Nichols professor Mauri Pelto and his research featured on CBS News “Sunday Morning”

August 19, 2025

Nichols College professor Mauri Pelto, scientist and top glaciologist, was recently featured on CBS News “Sunday Morning” for his pioneering work tracking glacier melt in the North Cascades in Washington state. Pelto, who founded the North Cascades Glacier Climate Project in the early 1980s, has spent more than 40 years returning to the same peaks each summer to measure the retreat of glaciers, which provide a vital supply of fresh water. His research, cited by NASA and international databases, has documented dramatic glacial loss—glaciers in the region have shrunk by 40 percent, with 12 vanishing completely, nine in just the past five years. As Pelto notes in the story, “This glacier would have been almost 50 feet above my head just a decade ago.”

The CBS News story details his decades of fieldwork and the urgent implications of human-caused climate change, illustrated in a striking way by his daughter, Jill Pelto, an artist-scientist who translates his measurements into watercolor paintings. Watch the full CBS News feature to see how his promise to chronicle 50 years of glacier change is revealing the profound impact of a warming world.
