On Oct. 23rd, Nichols College announced the winners of the "Nichols Reads" Essay Contest. First-year students were required to write an original essay on the best-selling book The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini. In their essays, contestants addressed one of four topics covered by the author: culture; moral and ethical decision making; tolerance and social expectations; and living in a war region.

Essays were chosen based on the quality of the writing and the meaningful insight provided on the topics. Rebecca Hamway, from Lancaster, Mass., wrote the winning essay entitled "Jealousy and Betrayal - A Vicious Circle." First, second and third place winners received a cash prize as indicated below:

1st place ($300) - Rebecca Hamway
2nd place ($200) - Ji-Young Kim
3rd place ($100) - Stephanie Haskell
Honorable Mention - Heather Wilson
Honorable Mention - Jennifer Mayer

This was the first year that Nichols College required summer reading for incoming freshmen. "Nichols Reads," developed by Professor Luanne Proko, was launched to provide a common educational experience, to reinforce the importance or reading as a life long pursuit, and to enhance and provoke intellectual interaction between students, faculty and staff, thereby building a stronger campus community.
