Jacqueline Asselin ’24 pens op-ed on financial aid equity

March 15, 2024

Senior Jackie Asselin penned a powerful opinion piece that appeared in today’s Worcester Telegram & Gazette. Jackie provides a thoughtful refute of the Commonwealth’s recent decision to make college free for low- and middle-income students, but only if they attend Massachusetts public institutions.

“My family has worked hard to make college possible for my sister and me,” says Jackie. “And I worked hard to find the college I think will give me the best education for what I want to do, in the kind of community that I find most appealing and comfortable. Everyone deserves that opportunity.”

Private colleges and universities across Massachusetts have applauded the decision to increase financial aid for students. Given the strength of higher education within Massachusetts, the Commonwealth should continue to seek innovative ways to make college affordable and attainable for all. But private institutions like Nichols College believe that financial aid should follow students, like Jackie, wherever they choose to go.
