What does it take to obtain a position with a company such as EMC, a global data storage company? Nichols 2012 graduate, Katie Swank, who starts working there fulltime in June, says the key for her has been to gain leadership experience on campus and to pursue an internship.

During her four years at Nichols, Swank has been active in a number of ways. As a Teacher’s Assistant (TA) for the Professional Development Seminar (PDS), she worked with first year students. “Being a TA for two years helped me learn how to be up in front of a class building my communication skills. This carried over to my job since I am in front of hundreds of students speaking at EMC's new hire orientations,” she says.

Swank says that her Human Resources classes have helped prepare her for some of the basics of her job such as interviewing skills, writing job descriptions, and recruiting. In addition, this semester her senior HR Seminar class focused on international issues. She found this very beneficial since EMC is a global company with 50,000 employees worldwide. “I oversee the intern/co-op program which hosts more than 500 students each year. Staying current with issues that may pop up in my career has helped me move past obstacles and learn from them,” she says.

Swank’s internship has been invaluable in helping her to gain a foot in the door at EMC. Her hard work has paid off as she was offered and has accepted an Associate Program Manager job at EMC. She will continue to co-run the intern/co-op program for all of North America as well as handle some recruiting through campus visits, career fairs, and networking events.

“Attending Nichols is all about what you make it,” says Swank. “The more you involve yourself in activities on campus, the more you will benefit from your Nichols experience. Most of the skills I gained for my career were through all of these experiences in addition to my classes and internship. I learned that the more involved I became, the more I got out of my education,” she adds.

Scoring an Internship at the N.E. Patriots

Nichols Senior, Mackenzie Walsh, ran the equivalent of a perfect pass route when she networked her way into an internship with the New England Patriots football team this past semester.

As an intern in the Patriots marketing department, part of Walsh’s job description includes writing proposals to present to companies,” she says. “That includes working with advertisers such as Dunkin’ Donuts and Nike to make sure their brands are clearly displayed in strategic locations around Foxboro Stadium,” she adds.

Walsh says that Nichols has prepared her for the internship through her classes and projects, including Effective Speaking, Business Marketing and the Professional Development Seminar (PDS).“Effective speaking helped me because it taught me how to speak in public without being nervous. After the class, I was able to do a ten minute presentation and sound professional when I was speaking with senior management at the Patriots,” she says.

The work also dovetails well with the Sales Management course Walsh is taking and also the fact that she is currently President of the Marketing and Communication Club on campus. “That’s the best part about marketing,” she says, “I can get into event planning, sales, or public relations. I can go so many directions in a company.”

Some of her most intriguing work involves prepping owner Robert Kraft and other Patriots executives with information on the VIPs who attend home games. “That includes a picture, the person’s position in (his or her) organization, a quick blurb about who he or she is,” Walsh explains, as well as a seat location, “in case Mr. Kraft wants to know.”

Walsh came to her internship with some solid experience, having interned during her junior year for the Worcester Sharks, the city’s minor league entry in the American Hockey League. Over the past decade, Nichols has developed an impressive history of student internships with big-league teams including the Red Sox, Boston Bruins, and Celtics as well as students who go to New York to work with the Knicks and Rangers.

Through all of her internship experiences, Walsh credits Nichols with helping prepare her for the interview process through resume writing workshops and practice interviews. “I would not have received my internships without the help of Nichols faculty and staff,” she adds.

Seniors Set Their Aim at Target

As graduation day nears, finding a job is a top priority for seniors at Nichols and those graduating from colleges around the country. Fortunately, for 2012 Nichols grads Ed Baia, Alexa Boucher, and Julianne Proulx, their internships this past summer with Target Corporation have all paid off. All three students have accepted positions as executive team leaders at the company upon their graduation in May.

For their internships, all three students were placed in different stores throughout New England: Baia, in Danvers, MA; Boucher, in Hadley, MA; and Proulx, in Smithfield, RI. They performed day-to-day tasks, acting as managers within the store. Upon completion of their internships, each worked on a project to make improvements in their specific store. They presented their results to their district store team leaders, district team leaders, and to Target’s campus recruiter and Nichols graduate, Brittney Case.

Proulx says that accepting a position at Target was an easy decision. “I knew that I would not become bored since team members rarely do the same task every day,” she says. Boucher loves the room for advancement at Target. She states, “Retail management may not always be glamorous, but you can grow.”

All three seniors credit their Nichols education with contributing to their success at Target. Boucher says she developed her confidence in public speaking, thanks to classes such as Effective Speaking and the Professional Development Seminar.

As a General Business student, Proulx says she appreciates the fact that she was able to focus on more than one aspect of business. “This allowed me to incorporate lessons from my management and marketing classes to use in real life situations at Target,” she adds.

Baia said his experience with mock interviews paid off as he was went through the first and second round interview process for new team members.

A variety of specializations at Nichols require internships, and students find it a valuable way to gain practical experience. As was the case with Baia, Boucher and Proulx, internships often lead to full-time employment upon graduation.

Success is Sweet for This Nichols Student, Robert Russo

“Chocolate Innovations is not a company looking to take up a portion of the industry, it is a company looking to lead the industry and be a trend setter in quality and customer service.”

--Robert Russo

In 2008, Robert Russo decided he wanted to start his own business selling by chocolate-covered strawberries. He continued to sell these delicious treats when he became a student at Nichols College. Russo says that he selected Nichols because he had aspirations of owning his own business someday. “I knew I wanted to own a business, and I felt that Nichols could help me do that and succeed,” he says.

“My entire business, Chocolate Innovations, has been built through all I have learned at Nichols, from writing a business plan, to social media to networking. Over my four years at Nichols, I have always tried to use my business as an example in class or for a project so I could get the assignment done but also work on my business at the same time.”

Within the General Business Program, Russo selected his three areas of concentration, Economics, Management and Human Resource Management, with the goal of broadening his skills. “I choose ECON so I could understand what was happening in the markets and how that will affect my business. Then I chose MGMT because obviously at some point I will have to know how motivate future employees,” he says. “Finally I selected HRM so if I do hire people, I will know the proper hiring process and work place etiquette.”

As an artist, Russo has a passion for making chocolate products not just for the taste but for the beauty as well. After creating 110 chocolate roses for his cousin’s wedding, Russo says, “I never expected people to ask me, ‘can we eat these?’ It must have meant that I was creating a product so beautiful that it was not worth destroying by eating it. That was a satisfying moment for me.” He adds, “I have found the most success when I create a product just for the pure enjoyment of doing so. I enjoy seeing the customer’s face when I unveil my creation.”

Russo has been accepted into Nichols 4+1 MBA program and will begin classes full time in the fall of 2012.

President Search | Nichols College

There are many wonderful opportunities ahead as the Nichols College campus community gets ready to celebrate its 200th anniversary in 2015.

After 12 years of leadership, Nichols sixth president, Dr. Debra Townsley, left in July 2010 to assume the presidency at Peace College, and it became the responsibility of the Board of Trustees to appoint the next president.

The Board's immediate goal was to ensure that the College continued to be true to its mission of developing tomorrow’s leaders through a dynamic, career-focused business education. To this end, the Board appointed Gerald Fels '66, D.B.A. (Hon.) '07 interim president on July 1st and left the day-to-day operations in his most-capable hands.

John H. McClutchy Jr. ’72, Nichols current board chair, says of Fels: “Jerry is the ideal choice for Nichols during this transition. As past chair of the board, he led Nichols during its financial turnaround and gained a deep knowledge and understanding of the College’s operations. Nichols has benefited from his considerable financial leadership and management expertise and has become a stronger, more secure institution because of it. Plus, Jerry has a genuine affection for Nichols and an interest in its future which is evident in the generous and dedicated support he and his wife Marilyn have shown over the years.”

Second, the Board named a President Search Committee which includes five current trustees, the interim president (also a trustee emeritus), select members of the faculty and alumni, as well as a student representative. The search process, which will be national and international in scope, will include a professional search firm that will be charged with maximizing the recruiting and assessment of the best possible candidates.

As the process begins, the Search Committee will be seeking input from the Nichols community on how to build on past successes and make an informed decision of selecting the next leader.

It is within these pages that the Board of Trustees will update the campus community on new developments in the selection process.

Employers - Internship Program | Undergraduate business program - Nichols College, MA

Many Nichols students take advantage of internship opportunities to enhance their educational experience. Nichols College strongly believes in the cooperative learning experience where students apply the knowledge they have gained in the classroom to an internship position. This philosophy has prompted the College to develop an internship program that allows our students the opportunity to gain on-the-job experience.

What is an internship?

An internship is defined as a supervised work/learning experience that exposes a student to professional responsibilities in a career field of interest. Internships are further defined by the acknowledgement that the student intern is the primary beneficiary of the relationship and that the supervision provided by the sponsoring organization offers both structure and evaluation to the student intern.

Timeframe

Internships occur at any time during the academic year or summer months. Career Services will advertise internship opportunities to our student body throughout the year. The majority of students typically seek opportunities based on an academic calendar: fall semester, spring semester and summer break. Specific internship hours are negotiated between the student intern and the sponsoring organization.

Compensation

It is the decision of the organization to offer compensation for an internship. Although not all internships offer compensation, those that do are highly attractive to students, especially during the summer months.

Nichols College offers Academic Internships for college credit and General/ Experiential Internships that are not for credit; both of which can be paid or unpaid.

Experiential Internship

Students must fulfill a 60-hour placement requirement for the internship to be recognized by the college. Students applying for an experiential internship must have completed at least 30 credit hours of classroom instruction before placement is approved, and have a minimum GPA of 2.0.

Academic Internship

Students must fulfill a 120-hour requirement in order for the internship to be recognized by the college. Students applying for an academic internship must have completed at least 60 credit hours of classroom instruction and have maintained a minimum GPA of 2.5. Students are also required to enlist a faculty sponsor that will be responsible for the academic component of the internship.

Please contact Lori Smith, Associate Director of Career Services & Internship Placement Coordinator at 508.213.2389 or lori.smith@nichols.edu for more information on the internship placement process or visit Road to Success to post internships with your company!
