  8. Nichols College Event to Address Terrorism, ISIS History

    The Nichols College Criminal Justice Management program will host on Wednesday, Nov. 30, 2016, a program about terrorism and ISIS and its history; the media's impact on related events; and counter-terrorism strategies. Assistant Professor of Criminal Justice Management Allison McDowell-Smith, Ph.D., who teaches the College’s “Bride of ISIS” course, will also address counter-terrorism strategies to effectively combat ISIS on social media. The event, which is free and open to the public, will be held in Daniels Auditorium on the Nichols campus, 124 Center Road, Dudley. It starts at 3:45 p.m.

    The 2017 Military Friendly® Schools list honors the top 15 percent of colleges, universities, and trade schools in the United States that support and embrace the educational pursuits of active military service members, veterans, spouses, and their children as students—and ensure their success. This is the second year in a row that Nichols College has been named to the list.

  10. Nichols College, Dudley Woman’s Club Partner on Library of Congress Veterans History Project

    Veterans from the southern Worcester County region are invited to share their stories about serving in the military; Dudley Woman's Club members are spreading the word of the project to veterans’ organizations in Charlton, Dudley, Oxford, Webster, and other local towns. Nichols College faculty and students are helping to coordinate and record interviews.

    Junior transfer student Alexis Gevry is attending Nichols College for the price of going to a community college. Gevry, from Killingly, Conn., is among the first transfers from four local community colleges to take advantage of Nichols College's new ABLE Initiative.

    The terms “dig”, “block”, and “kill” have joined layup, home run, and corner kick in the everyday sports vocabulary of Nichols students.  The additions to the athletic lexicon come courtesy of the Nichols women’s varsity volleyball team, which this fall took the court as the school’s 20th intercollegiate sport.

    University of Connecticut Professor Fakhreddin Azimi, Ph.D.—one of the most distinguished historians of Iran in the United States—will speak Oct. 19 at Nichols College. He will discuss contemporary Iranian politics and society as well as the contentious state of U.S.-Iranian diplomatic relations over the last 40 years.

  19. Nichols Institute for Women’s Leadership to Sponsor Talk by Mass. State Auditor Suzanne Bump

    Massachusetts State Auditor Suzanne Bump will speak Tuesday, Oct. 4, at Nichols College. Her talk, which starts at 6:30 p.m., will focus on public leadership, management, accountability in government, and the strides women have made—and the challenges they still face—in business and politics. The Nichols College Institute for Women’s Leadership (IWL) is sponsoring the event, which is open to the public. It will be held in Davis Hall Room 205-207 on the Nichols campus, 124 Center Road.

  24. Nichols College Partners with Community Colleges in Three States to Create Affordable Pathway to Higher Education for Transfer Students

    The agreements with Community College of Rhode Island, Quinebaug Valley Community College, and Quinsigamond Community College are part of a Nichols-launched initiative called Affordable Business and Leadership Education. They streamline and maximize the transfer credit process; transfer students will have the benefit of knowing that their credits at the community college level will be accepted by Nichols and that they will be guaranteed admission if they meet the minimum GPA requirement.

  29. Leadership on the Field

    Lacrosse and golf may not seem to have that much in common.  One is a team sport, the other highly individual.  One requires sprinting up and down a 110-yard field, and the other a steady march over a 6,000-yard course and 18 holes.  And while scoring in lacrosse usually means quick passing and quicker shooting, a winning golf score depends on a more deliberate shot.

    During the just completed spring vacation, almost a dozen Nichols students travelled to New Orleans as part of Alternative Spring Break to help restore houses still in need of repair after Hurricane Katrina a decade ago.  Their efforts added another chapter to the ongoing story of community service performed by Nichols students, including the participation this year by a number of them in a local Big Brothers Big Sisters program.

  41. Nichols College Receives $1 Million Gift to Establish Endowed Professorship of Accounting/Finance, Support Students

    A portion of the gift—bestowed by a generous anonymous donor, who is a Nichols graduate—will be used for an endowed professorship. Additionally, a Finance and Accounting Enhancement Fund will be established. The fund will be used to directly support students and faculty with curricular and co-curricular resources to augment and enrich the programs.

    The partnership forged with the Sheriff’s office has put the 20 Nichols criminal justice management students on the frontline of the opioid addiction epidemic as they study a group of Dudley District Court drug court participants—through coding, surveys, and statistical analysis—and help officials further study and obtain grant funding to address the crisis.

She is a former Fortune 500 corporate manager who now speaks to audiences about her experiences and moving beyond tragedy with resolve, strength, and determination.

  47. Father of One of Sandy Hook Massacre Victims to Speak at Nichols

    Jeremy Richman, Ph.D., co-founded the Newtown, Conn.-based Avielle Foundation with his wife Jennifer and named the organization after their daughter Avielle Rose Richman, one of the 26 children and educators killed in the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings. During his March 1 talk at Nichols College, he will discuss the stigma associated with mental illness and what is known regarding risk factors for engaging in violent behavior and protective factors for building connection and compassion.

  48. Military Friendly

    Senior Mario Turner (pictured far right) is taking five years to graduate from Nichols College, and for good reason.  Along the way, Turner has been pursuing a second education through the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves, a commitment that required him to miss two semesters for military training earlier in his college career.
