On June 21nd, Nichols College Vice President and Dean of Students Services, Dr. Bryan McCoy, named Blanche Milligan of Amherst, New Hampshire, as director of the Robert C. Fischer Policy & Cultural Institute. She replaces Len Harmon, who has accepted a position at the College as professor of Marketing.

- Fels Named Interim President of Nichols College
Gerald Fels has been named interim president of Nichols College. A 1966 graduate of the College and former chair of its Board of Trustees, Fels will assume the post on July 1 and serve until a permanent successor is appointed to replace Debra M. Townsley, Ph.D., who, in May, announced her resignation as president to head Peace College in Raleigh, N.C.

- Spring 2010 Dean's List Announced
Nichols College Dean's List gives recognition to those students who achieve high grades during a single semester. In order to be included in the Dean's List, a student must maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.2 for at least 12 credit-hours and receives no grades below a C+ during the semester. A student on the Dean's List whose semester grade point average is 3.6 or higher is awarded Dean's High Honors.

- Massasoit Community College to Offer a Nichols College M.B.A.
Nichols College President Debra M. Townsley and Massasoit Community College (MCC) President Charles Wall signed an agreement on April 15th to offer a Nichols College M.B.A. on the MCC Canton campus in the fall of 2010 and additionally, on the MCC Middleboro campus in the spring of 2011.

- 354 Degrees Conferred at 2010 Commencement
Nichols College 2010 Graduation Ceremony was held on Saturday, May 8th on campus in Dudley, Mass.
The Commencement Speaker was U.S. Senator Scott P. Brown. Other addresses were made by Valedictorian Gloria D. Harvey (North Grosvenordale, CT) and Senior Class President Kristin Marie Andrews (Spencer, MA).

- Dr. Debra M. Townsley to Assume Presidency at Peace College
Debra M. Townsley, Ph.D., has announced her resignation as president of Nichols College to assume the presidency of Peace College in Raleigh, N.C.
"Nichols College has been the center of my life and home to me and my family for the past 13 years," says Townsley. "Just as Nichols has been transformed over the past decade, I have been shaped by my experience here and feel humbled and proud to have played a part in the evolution of this excellent institution."

- 80's Music Rocks Nichols Campus
Nichols College students headed to the Center Road Auditorium on Tuesday night, April 13th, to hear music historian Barry Drake give his perspective on music in the 80's. Drake, who has presented at the College for the seventh consecutive year, was ecstatic to be back on the "Hill" and educating students who in the 80's were only infants.

- Res Life Promotes Sustainability
Nichols Residence Life wants students to become more "Aware, Active, and Accountable" in their lifestyles. "A sustainable lifestyle is more than just recycling," says Resident Director Leigh Soucy, who put together week-long program of education from April 5th - 9th. "It includes buying from local, organic farmers and reusing what one has, rather than continuing to consume resources." Soucy used campus email to daily remind students that "it pays to go green."

- Students Donate Clothing to Salvation Army
Over 1,000 pieces of clothing were collected for the needy as part of Nichols College's Office of Residence Life's Cultural Connections Week. - Student-Athletes Receive Community Engagement Award
The Colleges of Worcester Consortium, Inc., presented the Nichols College Bison Athletics Council Sophomore Class with a Community Engagement Award on March 2nd for exemplary service within the last year. The student-athletes sponsored a coat drive that provided over 100 coats to Abby's House in Worcester and to the Free Winter Coat Closet at the Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Southbridge.

- Dudley Tiger Cubs Roar on Nichols WNRC FM
Dudley's Tiger Cub Pack 274's motto is: search, discover, share, and they did so with gusto on November 18th as they toured two radio stations on Nichols campus: 14 watt WXRB in Academy Hall and 100 watt WNRC FM in Alumni Hall. The Cubs assisted "Polka Bob" Guyette with an on air station identification which went out to listeners in Dudley, Webster, Southbridge, Northern Connecticut and a corner of Rhode Island.

In the fall, college students are barraged by ads for Oktoberfest, an international festival where the main focus is on drinking large quantities of beer. The traditional Oktoberfest begins in Germany when the Mayor of Munich taps the first keg of beer. Every year, there are problems with young people who overestimate their ability to handle large amounts of alcohol and pass out.

- Nichols Attends Last Topol Performance in "Fiddler"
Nichols College American Musical Theater students and faculty saw the last performance of legendary actor Chaim Topol in Fiddler on the Roof at the Boston Opera House on Thursday, November 12th. The 74-year-old Israeli musical star, who played the iconic role of milkman Tevye over 2,500 times in the last 40 years, is leaving the national tour because of a shoulder injury.

- Nichols Panel Debates U.S. Government Regulation
After Nichols business student left Davis Hall on October 26th, the debate was still raging among panelists on how much regulation capitalism needs to maximize its benefits and minimize its costs to society. Moderator Dr. Thomas Duncan gave panelists Dr. Hans Despain, Telegram & Gazette Editor Christopher Sinacola, Dr. Edward Warren, and Professor Larry Muller five minutes to make their position statements before two-minute rebuttals. The debate was then opened to the floor.

- It was a Graveyard Smash!
It's a favorite tradition on the Nichols College campus to host the Webster-Dudley Boys and Girls Club for Halloween Trick or Treating. This year, on October 28th, 109 children arrived at the Auditorium on Center Road to receive candy from faculty and staff representing 18 departments and then, they were off running to residence halls and knocking on doors for some more. Children 5 - 9 years-of-age returned to the Auditorium soaked from the rain, but happy to have full bags of treats.

Moran Maximum Security Prison on October 8th in an examination of life behind bars.

- Graveyard Tales Open to the Public

- Students Visit Maximum Security Prison
On Thursday, October 8th, 33 Nichols College students studying criminal justice management, psychology and sociology accompanied their professors to the Rhode Island Maximum Security Prison to hear first-person accounts of incarceration. The inmates, serving for a variety of offenses including murder, DUI, robbery and drug dealing, candidly talked about the negative behaviors that led to their lives behind prison walls.

- Last Lecture VI Closes Series
It was a poignant ending to Nichols "Last Lecture" Series as Session VI presenters, Professor Richard Hilliard, Professor Lawrence Downs and Professor Karen Sasha Tipper, ended the very popular program on Wednesday, September 30th. Dr. Tipper, who will be retiring at the end of the year, received a standing ovation from the audience after she wished them "Good Night and Good Luck." Organizer Professor Luanne Proko, Chair of Nichols Reads, stated that the life lessons presented by the 13 Nichols professors represented 94 years of experience teaching at the Dudley, Mass., campus.

- Mystery Mayhem at Family Weekend
It was an evening filled with mayhem on Nichols campus September 26th as 130 students and their parents attended a Murder Mystery Dinner in Daniels Auditorium. The event was part of Nichols Homecoming Family Weekend, and participants were transported to the "Lizards Lounge," where an awards show is disrupted as Paparazzi, one of the award winners, is poisoned with cyanide.

- Campus Satellite in Palm Beach Is "Open for Business"
Nichols College is "open for business" and offering a Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.) and a Master of Leadership (M.O.L.) at its new satellite location on the campus of Palm Beach Community College (PBCC). Classes will begin in January for the spring 2010 semester. Nichols College and PBCC are working on an articulation agreement to give students in PBCC's new Bachelor of Applied Science degree in supervision and management program a seamless transfer opportunity to earn a graduate degree.

It was a heart-felt and humorous Part II to Nichols Last Lecture Series as Assistant Dean for Special Academic Programs Dawn C. Sherman and Vice President and Dean of Student Services, Dr. Brian McCoy describe how their families played an instrumental role in their life lessons learned. Their exuberance of voice paralleled the author of the national best-seller THE LAST LECTURE, Carnegie Mellon Professor Randy Pausch.
Dr. Joanne Newcombe introduced both speakers and ended the program by urging students to use these lectures as a way to open and connect to each other.

- Nichols Clubs Recruit at Fair
On September 16th, Nichols College held a fair on its newly renovated Daniels Walkway to help clubs recruit new members. "I am very pleased with the turnout," said Heather Barbour, Director of Student Activities. "We had 30 clubs represented and approximately 250 students attended to learn about involvement opportunities. The wide-variety of club offerings reflects the diversity and creativity of our student body. "

- "Sea" the World Voyager Kate O'Hara
Senior Kate O'Hara just returned from a Semester at Sea, a unique learning experience sponsored by the Fischer Institute as a way to help Nichols College students explore international social and cultural issues. For two and a half months this summer, she visited nine countries, four continents and swam in the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean, Black, and Adriatic seas.

- Reception Welcomes LiNC Students
A reception was held September 1st in the Ingraham Room to welcome Nichols College LiNC students to the campus. LiNC, which stands for Learning in the Nichols Community, is a program designed for first-year students who want to participate in a living and learning environment that supports the transition to colleges in a small cohort group of 22. LiNC students take three of five fall semester classes together, as well as live together on the 3rd floor of Shamie Residence Hall.

- Convocation 2009: Freshmen Pledge to Do Their Best!
At the September 1st Convocation 2009 held on the lawn in front of the Guest House on Center Road, Nichols College President Debra M. Townsley spoke "On Leadership, Tradition and Community." She began by asking the gathered freshmen to complete an exercise to connect nine dots with four straight lines without lifting their pencils off the paper. The solution required that several of the lines be drawn outside the box.

- 2008-2009 Community Benefit Report Released
On August 27th, the Nichols College President's Office released its 2008-2009 Community Benefit Report demonstrating a direct economic impact on the surrounding region of $104 million. - 120 High School Freshmen Receive Leadership Training at Nichols
"Be the Change!" was the theme of the third annual START Youth Leadership Conference on the Nichols College campus June 7th and 8th. Over 120 students participated from 82 high schools throughout New England in the 2-day residential experience which included exercises in identity building, leadership and goal setting.

In order to be included in the Dean's List, a student must have a minimum average of 3.2 for at least 12 credit-hours and have received no grades below C+ during the semester. A student with a semester average of 3.6 or higher receives a Dean's High Honors designation.

- Students Tour Italy and Greece
On May 13th, the parking lot behind Conrad Hall was a busy hum of Nichols students saying goodbye to their parents as they caught a bus to Logan International Airport for a 9-day visit to Italy and Greece. There will be a 3-day Greek Island Cruise extension to the trip on Louis Cruise Lines, stopping at the Ports of Mykonos, Rhodes, Patmos, and Kusadasi.

- 284 Nichols Degrees Conferred on May 9th
Nichols College's 2009 Graduation ceremonies were held May 8th and 9th on campus under the canopy of a large white tent erected on the softball field. 284 degrees were conferred, including: Associate of Arts (2), Associate of Business Administration (15), Bachelor of Arts (15), Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration (180), Master of Business Administration (65), and Master of Organizational Leadership (5).

- Nichols Students Tour Civil War's Bloodiest Battleground
On the weekend beginning March 27th, 15 members of Nichols History Club and five professors toured the historic sites of Gettysburg, Penn.
"The Gettysburg National Military Park was an amazing place to visit," says Paul E. Lambert, Visiting Assistant Professor of History. "The battlefield's appearance is close to how it looked in early July 1863 when the three-day Battle of Gettysburg took place. Vast and open, the battlefield gives a person a sense of awe."

- 131 Student-Athletes Recognized for Academic Excellence
Nichols College recognized 131 of its student-athletes for their excellence in academics as well as in athletics on Wednesday as part of National Student-Athlete Day. The students honored at the special ceremony, held in Nichols' Auditorium, have maintained a cumulative grade-point average of over 3.0 and are members of at least one of the Bison's 15 varsity programs. Nichols Director of Athletics Charlie Robert was the keynote speaker for the event.
In addition, 18 juniors and seniors were inducted into the National College Athlete Honor Society, Chi Alpha Sigma. Nichols is the ninth local chapter in Massachusetts to honor members based on outstanding scholarship (a minimum 3.4 grade point average based on a 4.0 scale), earned athletic letter winner, and excellent character and citizenship.

Over 300 students packed into the Auditorium on April 8th to cheer on their friends at the third annual Nichols College Dance Company performance directed by Professor Jacqueline Head. - "A to B" Business Program Takes Off!
42-year-old Davida Muldrow decided to follow her mother's advice and "hitch her wagon to the brightest star." That star happens to be fellow cohort Pho Huynh, who made a pact with Muldrow to finish Fast Track Business Administration Program at Qunisigamond Community College (QCC) -- no matter what!
The seventh time was a charm," says Muldrow, referring to the fact that since graduating from high school, she had enrolled in seven colleges. "When you work full-time, it's really hard to stay focused, and Pho and my family have made all the difference!"

- Destination Teaching: Profile of Nichols Student Matthew James
Matthew James admits that his 10-year-old daughter Michaela is one step ahead of him when it comes to classroom technology. She's already savvy about using SMARTBoard(TM) in her 4th grade class at Dudley Elementary School.
As a math/education major at Nichols College, Matthew was naturally curious about how to best integrate technology into his student-teaching lessons. When he met Principal Terri Caffelle in January at an information night for parents, he asked her if she would consider hosting a "hands-on" demonstration of interactive white board technology to Nichols' education students.
