At the August 27th Convocation 2007 held on the lawn of the upper campus, Nichols College President Debra M. Townsley encouraged first-year students to "think outside the box" as she discussed leadership and academic opportunities which develop when engaging faculty and classmates.
Dr. Townsley also encouraged students to join clubs, student government and athletic teams. "I hope you have a great four years here," she said. "We love watching you grow and learn. You'll get to know our incredible faculty, who are always willing to share their time with you." Dr. Townsley closed by emphasizing that Nichols faculty and staff care deeply about student success.
In addition, Professor Marcia A. Behrens, who led the procession as Faculty Senate Chair, made opening remarks, Provost and Executive Vice President Dr. Ezat Parnia spoke "On Tradition and Community," Professor Luanne V. Proko spoke "On Learning," and Dr. Wayne-Daniel Berard spoke "On Honor and Respect."
Kayla R. Bertrand, student government president, told the Class of 2011 to "appreciate the differences each brings to the classroom, be active in class discussions, and most importantly, listen." She then led freshmen in the Convocation Pledge:
"Do you pledge today to expend your energy and skills not only in the pursuit of your own individual success, but for the betterment of our community and the world?"
"We do," responded students.
"Further, do you pledge today to use your time at Nichols, in the classroom and out, to increase your knowledge and develop your abilities, so that you create opportunities for leadership and personal growth?"
"We do," responded students.
"And do you pledge today to treat yourselves, your fellow students, and others in our college community with honor and respect?"
"We do," responded students.
