Nichols College Receives Gift to Establish Scholarship for Local Undergraduate Students

DUDLEY, Mass.—Nichols College has received a $100,000 gift that will be partially used to endow a scholarship for undergraduate students at the College who are from the local area. The generous commitment was made by Jeff and Kristin Johnson of Charlton. Jeff Johnson graduated from Nichols in 1990.

“On behalf of the Nichols College community—students, faculty, staff, alumni, and trustees—I thank Jeff and Kristin Johnson for their dedication to our local undergraduate students,” said Nichols College President Susan West Engelkemeyer, Ph.D. “This transformative gift will open doors for many college students.”

Jeff Johnson is owner and president of Worcester, Mass.-based Eagle Cleaning Corp., which he founded in 2000. The company employs 180 people and maintains 75 buildings from Worcester to Boston.

When it came to contributing to Nichols, Johnson said he wanted to give back in a personal, meaningful way by endowing a scholarship.

“Nichols College played a big role with my success as a business owner, and it turns students into leaders,” said Johnson, who has served on the College’s Board of Advisors since 2009. “I’ll always be grateful to the faculty, especially to Professor Louise Nordstrom for mentoring me and caring about my success.”

The Johnson scholarship is one of 28 new endowed scholarships created during the College’s Bicentennial Campaign. It will be awarded to a rising sophomore who has demonstrated a marked improvement from the first semester to the second semester based on grade point average (GPA) and college involvement. The recipient must be a local resident (from Charlton, Dudley, Oxford, Sutton, Webster, or Worcester) and must also maintain a GPA of at least 3.0.

Nichols College is a college of choice for business and leadership education as a result of its distinctive career-focused and leadership-based approaches to learning, both in and out of the classroom. Founded in 1815, Nichols transforms today’s students into tomorrow’s leaders. Nichols serves students interested primarily in a comprehensive business education that includes a strong liberal arts foundation curriculum.
