Members of the Webster-Dudley Chamber of Commerce listened to some sage advice as to why hosting a college intern can be a critical support tool for the local economy during a June 3rd "Business Educational After Hours" at the Colonial Restaurant in Webster.

"Effective internship programs can be an incredible recruiting tool," stated Domenic Cornacchioli, an Executive Team Leader at the Target store on Lincoln Street. Cornacchioli graduated this June from Nichols College and after his successful internship at Target, was offered a lucrative position with the hip discounter. Cornacchioli's business internship allowed him an opportunity to present his fresh perspective and new ideas to Target's management team, and they liked what they saw.

"At Target," says Brittany Blair, Target's Group Campus Recruiter based in Danvers, Mass., "we seek to hire Nichols student interns because of their strong ability to lead and their determined nature."

"And internships are a strategy that Target uses to tap into rising talent," notes Heather Maietta, Director of Nichols Career Services. "It ensures that Target's workforce remains strong and competitive."

Many businesses use Nichols skilled business majors for short term projects, particularly those focused on technology and smart marketing through social networks. The College offers Academic Internships for college credit and Experiential Internships that are not for credit; both of which can be paid or unpaid. Most importantly, these internships provide a foundation for improved job opportunities at graduation.

Academic Internships require that the students fulfill 120-hours of service. Students receive credit for work within an organization that forms the basis for a term paper or other evidence of scholarly achievement. Students work closely with a field sponsor and Nichols faculty member who guide and evaluate performance. Experiential internships require that students fulfill 60-hours of service and that they work closely with an employee at the sponsoring organization.
