Commencement 2008

Baccalaureate
Friday night's 6:30 p.m. Baccalaureate Service in Daniels Auditorium began with an invocation by Director of Spiritual Life, Dr. Wayne-Daniel Berard. Management Program Chair, Assistant Professor Arthur Duhaime, gave the address and President Debra Townsley led the Baccalaureate Pledge.

The Baccalaureate Service is believed to have originated at Oxford University in 1432, but our tradition at Nichols is an interfaith, intercultural service celebrating the completion of each undergraduate's academic career as the opening event of Commencement.

Commencement Ceremony
The Saturday morning procession began at 10:30 a.m. as faculty, staff, graduates and trustees walked down the hill from the Athletic Center to the big white on the softball field.

Senior Class President Amanda L. Harvey began her address by quoting a Corey Smith's song - "I'm Not Gonna Cry," because she thought she just might. "For students that lived on campus, and walked to class, at least half of the journey was always uphill," she said.

Valedictorian Stephanie R. Tenczar told fellow grads that she often asks herself if she's ready to start the next phase in her life. "Am I ready as Ghandi suggests to be that change I want to see in the world." Tenczar states that it's not about being ready -- it's about being prepared to change the world and she believes that Nichols College has prepared her well.

There were two recipients of honorary degrees. Nichols Trustee Mary C. DeFeudis presented Staples Inc. founder, Thomas G. Stemberg, with a Doctor of Science in Business Administration, stating that Nichols College applauded his entrepreneurial spirit and "active leadership" in making Massachusetts more livable, competitive and sustainable. Nichols Trustee Martin J. Powers presented Michael J. Vendetti with a Doctor of Science in Sports Administration and thanked his former coach for directing athletics and teaching at the College for 24 years.

In Thomas G. Stemberg's commencement address, graduates were told to "Live reality, but don't ever forget to dream the dream...For most people, success comes over time and is built on experience and learning and practicing the fundamentals of business...Realize that you're going to face adversity in your careers and lives. Turn it into opportunity."

The presentation of degrees and awards was completed by Board of Trustees Chairman Robert J. Vaudreuil; Dean of Graduate and Professional Studies Laurie Albert; Associate Dean of Liberal Arts Jeffrey Halprin, Ph.D.; Associate Dean of Business Libba G. Moore, Ph.D.; and Registrar Betin Robichaud. President Debra M. Townsley, Ph.D. conferred the degrees.

"To Nichols we raise our voice in a chorus 'neath copper beeches. Join our song..." sang the Nichols College 2008 graduates before the recessional. Afterwards, students headed with their families and friends to Lombard Dining Hall for an M.B.A. reception or to the Recreation and Athletic Center for an undergraduate reception.
