When you click on the links to the Library's online catalog from the Library's website things will look a bit different becasue we have a new state-of-the-art integrated library system!
The library staff has worked hard for over a year to implement this new system and it went live over the winter break. We believe you will be VERY pleased with its appearance, functionality, and ease of use.
You can search by keyword(s), title, authoer, or subject. In addition, you now have the ability to view your own patron record to see what books you have checked out and when they are due. You can even renew items online. An advanced Search function offers the ability to combine terms easily and/or focus the scope of a search by location, format, and/or publication date as well as by Call Number and ISBN.
The new results display helps you distinguish easily between various formats, (such as book or electonic book or CD versus video, etc.) and makes locating items within the library easier. Another notable feature of the new catalog is its ability to rank results by relevancy. And if a search of our local holdings fails to locate anough relevant items we've placed a link to Worldcat on the first results page so you can search the holdings of over 63,000 other libraries (you find it, we can usually get it!)
If you have any questions on using the new OPAC please don't hesitate to ask one of the Reference Librarians; a Flash tutorial is also available from our ‘How To Use' guides page linked from the ‘Get Research Help' on the right side of the Library's homepage. Also, please understand that the online catalog is only one feature of our new system; we also have a new cataloging and circulation component. There will be a learning curve for student workers at the front desk and we appreciate your understanding as they (and we) develop the necessary expertise.
Fall 2007
Read a good book lately? Share your likes and dislikes with others!
We've created a new Readers' Advisory blog at http://www.conantlibrary.blogspot.com
If you have a book you'd like to recommend or discuss with your friends post a comment! All you have to do is click on the 'Post Comments Here' link. (If you don't have an email or other account with Google you will be asked to create one.)
And if you're looking for a good book to read and haven't discovered it yet, the Library lobby houses our new popular fiction books right next to the Circulation Desk.
On Sunday, October 28, from 9 - 10 pm, masters storyteller Odds Bodkin will present tales of the supernatural in the Lobby of Conant Library. Bodkin represents a new direction in storytelling. A multi-voiced character actor, he tells a wide variety of stories self-accompanied on a stage full of instruments. The New York Times called him a "consummate storyteller." Seating is limited so get there early!
At this year's annual Employee Recognition luncheon Sandra Lobo (Patron Services Coordinator)[bottom right], Evelyn Nieszezewski (Acquisitions and Nichols Archives assistant curator)[bottom center], and Pauline Sroczynski (Evening Supervisor) [bottom left] were recognized for 25 years and 20 years respectively for their dedication and service to the Nichols community. Congratulations! Also pictured are Donna DeNardis [top right], who was recognized last year for 25 years of service and Jim Douglas.
No, not the dorms...well, OK, maybe the dorms. But now it's also easy to find all this and more at the Library! Thanks to a grant from Verizon we've begun a collection of new popular fiction...more than 200 titles. If you enjoy reading romance, suspense, science fiction, humor, etc. check out the shelves next to the Circulation Desk.
And if there are specific authors you like and we don't have their latest book fill out the pink form at the desk and we'll try to get it for you!
