Overview

The Academic Resource Center at Nichols College is designed to offer help in writing, math, and accounting, as well as many other core courses offered by the college. Staffed by academic peer tutors, certified academic peer tutors, and professional tutors, the Center works with students on a one-to-one basis and in group settings. Tutors and staff are also available to help students improve their study skills, work habits, and test-taking strategies. The Center's goal is to help students become competent independent learners.

In addition to tutoring, the Center also offers the following resources:

* In-class presentations
* Review sessions
* Faculty and student workshops
* Computer Lab with software in grammar review and color printers
* Online tutoring (introductory phase)
* Additional classroom resources (study guides, previous exams/quizzes, etc. for select classes)

Types of In-Person Tutoring

Within the one-to-one and group settings, the Center has different programs to suit each student's need.  The four most common services are listed below in more detail.

Drop-in Tutoring
You may visit the ARC at any time; however, because our appointment tutoring is the most popular, you may be asked to wait or return to the Center at a later time if all tutors on duty are already working with another student.

Appointment Tutoring
You may call ext. 2200 or stop into the ARC anytime to make an appointment and you may make as many appointments as you wish within the subject matter of your choice.

Block Tutoring
Block tutoring allows you to sign up for a "block" of three tutoring sessions in order to:
1) prepare for a specific exam
2) revise a specific paper
3) try tutoring to see if it is helpful for your needs

At the conclusion of the three sessions, you may then revert to appointment tutoring, reserve another block (based on the availability of your tutor), or switch into weekly tutoring.

Weekly Tutoring
You may sign up for the same tutor, for the same subject, on a weekly or bi-weekly basis. This allows the tutor to monitor your progress, follow your syllabus, and offer feedback and response to you on a regular basis. This form of tutoring is reserved for the individual with significant difficulty in a specific subject area.
