Teaching Philosophy/Goals
My statement of teaching philosophy would be: "Encourage the students to interact, encourage individualism, promote discussions, and make the learning process interesting and fun."
Over the years that I have been privileged to be able to teach both in the conventional classroom setting as well as online, I have found that both settings are conducive for the students to learn from the textbook, the professor, and probably more importantly from each other. Each student brings a vast amount of knowledge in the form of experience to the course. To be able to share this knowledge with each other promotes the learning experience. From a teaching standpoint, I also learn from the students and use this knowledge in subsequent classes.
In my classes we are all equals. Learning is nurtured if the students realize that their thoughts and opinions are welcomed and encouraged. I promote individualism and encourage a student to "think outside the box". I am a believer that there can always be a better way to solve a problem if we use historical data, review it, and analyze the outcomes.
A student should be encouraged to participate in discussions, whether it be in the classroom or online. In real world situations, practitioners should offer their thoughts and ideas; the classroom should be no different.
Probably the most important philosophy that I utilize is that learning should be interesting and fun. A student should remember the material I'm presenting long after the last day of class. If this is to happen, the course setting has to be interesting for the information to be retained after the final projects, papers, or exams are passed in. Making the material interesting encourages a student to be involved, to be interested, and to learn.
Interests
I enjoy boating, bike riding, and cooking the most. In the spring and fall my wife and I will spend weekends finding bike trails to ride throughout New England and in the summer months enjoy spending time on our boat, exploring the different lakes, rivers, and bays scattered through the Northeast. In the winter months cooking is a great way to spend my time waiting for the better weather so I can get back outdoors again.
