Welcome to Mental Health Services!
Our mission in Mental Health Services is to provide confidential, free counseling services to students in a caring, respectful environment. Our services are available to all full-time, undergraduate students. We are dedicated to helping students enrich their college experience by talking with them about their feelings, choices, and concerns they might face. We help facilitate self-growth, self-esteem and foster the student’s ability to cope with life’s challenges by exploring with them their own natural resiliency. While counseling cannot provide all the answers, we strive to help student’s find their own answers from within.
Our services include direct individual personal counseling and/or referral to outside community resources.
Why Come To Counseling?
Students seek out counseling for many issues. Counseling provides a safe, confidential, non-threatening environment that may help you with the process of change. A counselor does not offer advice, but rather has an objective point of view and will help you explore the options that are available to you so you can make decisive action for yourself. Counseling is a process of self-exploration and growth.
Issues that are often explored include:
Depression
Anxiety
Weight/ food issues
Body Image
Loneliness
Roommate issues/conflicts
Grief issues over the loss of a loved one
Relationship Issues
Family Issues
Experiencing a traumatic event
This is only a partial list of the issues we could explore. It should be noted, however, that issues that involve primarily substance abuse/dependence ,court involvement or court ordered services are referred to community resources. We will be happy to inform students of available resources in the area, however.
Voluntary substance abuse evaluation and educational forums are available to select students meeting distinctive sanction criteria through the Nichols College disciplinary process.
