Registering Computer on Campus
The first time your computer tries to access the internet via the network wall jack in your dorm room, your computer will automatically go through a registration process.
Why do I need to go through this registration process?
One single infected computer can literally prevent an entire dorm from accessing the internet. Therefore, the registration process is designed to protect every student's computer from viruses and from the inability to access the internet.
What is required to start the registration process?
- Your computer must be plugged with ethernet cable to the network wall jack. The registration process will not work with the wireless card.
- The first time your computer tries to access the internet, a logon screen will appear asking for your Nichols username and password.
- USER NAME: first initial, middle initial (if you have one), last name
(example: if your name is James A. Smith, your username will be jasmith
If no middle initial exists in the system, the username would be jsmith)
- PASSWORD: Your initial password is as follows: #fmlMMDDYYYY
The password begins with the # symbol
"fml" is the first/middle/last initials of the person's name
"MMDDYYYY" is the person's date of birth in month/day/year format,
(example: #jas06071954)
- EMAIL ADDRESS: Firstname.Lastname@nichols.edu
(example: James.Smith@nichols.edu)
What checks does the registration process perform?
- Do you have an approved antivirus software installed?
- Is the antivirus subscription up to date?
- Are your virus definitions up to date?
- Do you have all the Windows high priority security patches installed?
What happens if my computer fails the registration process?
- You will be required to correct the issue. Then you will need to go to through the registration process again.
- If you need to install an antivirus software, Nichols does provide a free campus licensed antivirus software through the ResNet (Residential Network) site.
- You may need to perform these steps repeatedly, if your system is not up to date.
I have gone through the registration process several times and I still cannot access the internet.
- Try restarting your computer.
- Go to the Nichols ResNet and click on DOWNLOADS link to review possible resolutions.
- If you are using a wireless router to connect to the internet, all roommates must complete the registration process before anyone will have access.
- If you still cannot access the internet, please open a ticket via the I.T. help desk system, and a technician will contact you.
