Online Career Resources

Through your Professional Development Seminars (PDS), you have been given the tools and skills needed to become successful. However, a major component of finding a job is being aware of the process. Making sure your resume is updated, developing a strong cover letter, and creating a complete list of references is only the beginning.

GET ORGANIZED

Create a binder where you can keep all necessary paperwork about the positions you are applying for. Make sure you note the title of the position, contact information and when you applied. Also, take notes about each contact you have with the company. This form can be used as a quick reference when employers call. Other items to include in your recruiting binder are business cards you collect, a copy of your résumé and references, newspaper clippings of jobs you are interested in, and general information about each company.

STARTING OFF

First off, you must define what you are looking for. Begin by narrowing your search to one or two industries you are interested in. The recruiting process will be a lot more effective if you focus on only one or two industries at a time. You will also need to choose the location of where you would like to work. If you are planning on moving to another part of the country, find resources that will help you locate jobs in those geographical areas. These resources can include yellowpages.com, the online directory for the local chamber of commerce and contacts through networking, including Nichols alumni.

FINDING COMPANIES

After finding out what you want to do and where you want to do it, your next objective will be to locate companies within that area and within the industry you are interested. Check out the list of websites the Office of Career Services has compiled. You will be able to search by industry and location.

ON AND OFF CAMPUS RECRUITING AND CAREER FAIRS

A great way to get started on any job search is to explore the on campus recruiting and off campus recruiting options available to you through the Office of Career Services.

Participating in Career Fairs is a great way to meet recruiters face to face. Make sure to bring along numerous copies of your resume and dress professionally. You can check out the list of companies attending to the Nichols College Career Fair on Tuesday, March 4, 2008.

NEWSPAPERS

You should be constantly looking in the newspapers to see what is out there. If you are interested in moving to another part of the country, subscribe to their local paper online. Clip the advertisements for the positions you are interested in, place it in your recruiting binder, and apply!

COMPANY WEBSITES

Company websites should be used to gather more information about a specific job. If you are interested in a particular organization, check out their website to see their job postings. These websites offer valuableinformation  about the company and the positions they may have open.

NETWORKING

Don’t be afraid to ask friends, relatives, neighbors or acquaintances if there are any jobs available in the organizations they work for. Networking can be an invaluable resource. Having someone in the organization you are interested in refer you can aid in the process. Ask your list of contacts to speak to their Human Resources Manager on your behalf.
