Teaching Philosophy / Goals

Welcome!

Few fields of study offer more career opportunities than psychology. They are diverse, challenging, and fun. And, for the most part, they pay well. Within each specialization of psychology, the variety of challenges and activities can interest even the most easily bored individuals.

In any random week, I may give a presentation to the faculty, work on projects with the Psychology Club, record a radio show, consult with an educational or business organization, meet one-on-one with students I supervise, review an article for a journal, correspond with collaborators at other colleges about how our joint research projects are going, attend a faculty meeting, and play several rounds of volleyball with students and faculty. I love the amazing variety of activities I do in my job (as you can hear below on the radio show), and I represent only one of many possible careers in psychology -- that of an academic psychologist.

Psychology is one of the most rewarding fields you can enter. Psychology is fun. It helps people, advances scientific and clinical understanding and it pays relatively well. Most psychologists earn well above the median salary in the United States. Few earn stratospheric wages, but some do -- generally highly successful psychologists in private practice, organizational psychologists, or writers of either textbook or books for the popular press. Realistically, chances are that you will neither go broke nor live in a palatial mansion if you choose a career in psychology. What you will do is help people improve their lives, help people understand themselves and others, perhaps advance the state of our knowledge and have a great time while you do it!
