Teaching Philosophy / Goals

I believe that education is much more than the transfer of knowledge related to a specific subject area. My goal is to help develop the mind and character of students so that they are prepared to meet the challenges, changes and opportunities they will encounter throughout their careers. Students graduating from college today will find that much of the subject matter they learned in their classes will be obsolete within a few years of graduation. They must be prepared to continue learning throughout their lifetimes. As leaders in business and in the world community, Nichols graduates must also be able to interact effectively with people and organizations from diverse cultures in a global environment.

My classes are highly interactive and challenge students to actively engage in the learning process, to think outside the box, and to integrate knowledge obtained from a variety of sources to solve problems and creatively address case situations. As an educator, my role extends beyond the classroom. I want my students to feel free to drop by the office to discuss issues related to the course, as well as their personal aspirations and concerns about their careers.

Interests

My main area of interest is leadership development. As coordinator of the minor in Leadership, I am currently developing a new course entitled The Leadership Experience. The course will afford students the opportunity to build on their campus leadership experiences by directly applying their skills in planning and coordinating a campus event. This program is designed to provide students with opportunities to work with current business leaders and to develop their own leadership skills.
