How to Become a Tutor
If you are one of the few students eligible to become an Academic Peer Tutor for the Academic Resource Center at Nichols College, it can be a challenging and rewarding experience for you! Recognized by faculty and administration, peer tutors are important individuals who develop positive learning skills in our students while sharpening their own academic and content skills. In addition to this recognition, it is a great experience to add to your resume! Peer tutoring also offers many other great benefits.
Requirements:
3.0+ G.P.A. (for certification); 2.8+ (for hire)
A/B Average in subject matter tutored
Faculty recommendation
Successful completion of interview process
Benefits of becoming an Academic Peer Tutor:
Money
- Peer tutoring is a paid position.
- It can be work-study or non-work study position.
- Wage increases are attached to advanced levels of certification! (We're the only on campus student position where raises are allowed!)
Flexibility
- Hours are flexible. Day and evening hours are available.
- Schedule your time around other work schedules, classes, and sports.
Academic Achievement as well as Personal Achievement
- Enhance your own academic understanding of subject material.
- Tutors are often recognized on and off campus for their achievements.
Academic Credit
- The certification/training programs allow you to earn academic credits that will appear on your college transcript.
Certification
- Certification is offered at three levels. Completion of each level offers awards recognition by certificate and spring honors ceremony. (Please note, although individuals with 2.80 or higher GPA's may tutor, only tutors sustaining a 3.00 or higher GPA will be eligible for certification.)
Travel
- Tutors have an opportunity to attend and present at regional and national conferences. So far, we've attended conferences in Fall River, MA; Keene, NH; Bryant College; Northeastern University, and Penn State, PA. Also, social events are scheduled throughout the year.
