DUDLEY, Mass.- Nichols College was awarded the 2007-08 Worcester College Cup in a ceremony held on campus on Monday afternoon. The Cup is awarded annually to the most successful varsity athletics program by the Worcester Telegram & Gazette. The Bison had the highest combined varsity winning percentage among the eight other participating colleges in Worcester County. On hand for the ceremony was Nichols’ President Debra M. Townsley, Vice President and Dean of Student Services Brian McCoy, Director of Athletics Charlyn Robert as well as several coaches and staff members. Presenting the Worcester College Cup was Telegram & Gazette columnist Jen Toland.

DUDLEY, Mass.- Beginning in August, the Nichols College men’s soccer team will travel throughout Europe to gear up for the fall of 2008 season. The team has raised over $78,000 by hosting training camps for the Massachusetts Olympic Development Program over the last three years to help pay for the once in a lifetime tour as well as equipment.

DULUTH, Ga.- Nichols College sophomore Pat Pio (Somers, Conn.) has been named to the PING Golf Division III All-Northeast Region Team as voted on by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA). Pio was previously named Nichols’ William Horrigan-Bud Sessions Award winner as the College’s sophomore male athlete of the year.

DUDLEY, Mass.- The Nichols College Department of Athletics held its annual end of the year banquet on Sunday, May 4 to honor its senior student-athletes as well as hand out 12 major awards, including the Hal Chalmers Award and Senior Male and Female Athletes of the Year Awards. The keynote speaker for the event, held at Nichols’ Auditorium, was Nichols’ alum and three-sport captain Amahl Williams ’02.

SPRINGFIELD, Mass.- A total of 16 Nichols’ student-athletes were named to The Commonwealth Coast Conference 2007-2008 Academic All-Conference Team as announced by Commissioner Gregg M. Kaye. In all, 312 student athletes from the conferences’ 14 institutions earned honors.

DUDLEY, Mass.- Senior Ann Talarico (Ware, Mass.) laced a three-run homer to center field in the fourth inning to lead Simmons to a 4-1 victory over Nichols in opening round action of the ECAC Division III New England Tournament. The Sharks, seeded third in the tourney, will move on to second round action this Saturday. The Bison close out the year 26-17 overall, the second most wins in the program’s history. Simmons is now 32-10 overall.

CAPE COD, Mass.- The Nichols College softball team received the sixth seed in the upcoming ECAC Division III New England Softball Championship as announced by the ECAC office on Monday. The Bison will host third seeded Simmons College on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. Nichols advanced to The Commonwealth Coast Conference Championship on Saturday, falling to Endicott, which is ranked number one in New England. Simmons appeared in the GNAC Championship, falling to Pine Manor last Sunday.

BEVERLY, Mass. – Led by senior Jenn Elwell (Tewksbury, Mass.), the Endicott College softball team won its sixth consecutive TCCC Championship by defeating Nichols College 7-0 on Saturday afternoon at Endicott Softball Field in Beverly, Mass. The Gulls and the Bison both won match-ups against Western New England College earlier in the day to advance to the finals. EC topped WNEC in a continuation game from Friday by the score of 4-1, while Nichols edged out the Golden Bears for a 2-1 victory.

BEVERLY, Mass.- The Nichols College softball team advanced to The Commonwealth Coast Conference Championship game by defeating Western New England College 2-1 on Saturday morning. The Bison will now face top-seeded Endicott and will need to get two victories against the Gulls. Endicott defeated WNEC earlier in the day to stay a perfect 2-0 in the double elimination tournament. The first game is set to begin at 12:45 while the second game will be played 20 minutes later, if it is necessary.

WENHAM/BEVERLY, Mass.- The Nichols College softball team advanced on to the final day of play in The Commonwealth Coast Conference Tournament with a pair of wins on Friday. The Bison defeated Gordon 5-0 at Endicott in their first game of the day before earning a 11-10 victory in nine innings against the University of New England at Gordon. Nichols scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to tie the game at 10 all and plated the game-winning run in the ninth. The Bison will play the loser of the Endicott/Western New England College game, which got postponed in the fourth inning with the Gulls leading 4-1 today. That game will resume at 9:00 a.m.tomorrow with the Nichols game set to begin at 10:00 a.m.
